Nutrition Responsive Budgeting

Nutrition plays a crucial role in human health, development, and productivity, promoting physical growth, cognitive function, and immune system strength. However, issues like food insecurity, poor dietary habits, and limited access to nutritious food, especially in low- and middle-income countries, result in undernutrition, obesity, and micronutrient deficiencies. These challenges contribute to high disease rates, stunted growth in children, and decreased economic productivity. Despite the growing awareness of nutrition’s importance, addressing these problems is often hindered by insufficient resources, poor policy coordination, and inadequate funding for nutrition programs. This course aims to provide participants with knowledge on integrating nutrition priorities into budgeting, applying nutrition-responsive budgeting techniques, tracking nutrition spending effectiveness, and fostering multi-sectoral coordination to improve global and national nutrition outcomes.

Overview

The World Bank's Health Systems Flagship Program is designed to foster policy dialogue and capacity building, helping countries plan and implement reforms that advance Universal Health Coverage (UHC). The program offers a Community of Practice (CoP) for participants and alumni of the "Flagship Core Course" and "Flagship Deep Dive," enabling ongoing discussions with peers and colleagues. The Core course typically lasts 1-2 weeks and presents an overview of health system reform options, allowing policymakers to evaluate different approaches. It helps participants identify necessary policy levers, define challenges, and make informed decisions based on the strengths and weaknesses of various options. By the end of the course, participants are better equipped to navigate complex health system reforms and work toward UHC in their countries.
