Scaling Next Generation Rice

The World Bank

The World Bank
Rice feeds 4 billion people globally, employs 144 million people worldwide, with 80 percent of production done by smallholder farmers.  As climate impacts are driving major losses in yields and income, the agendas of livelihoods and climate change go hand in hand in the rice sector. At the same time, rice cultivation accounts for over one-third of all emissions from the food sector.

The “Scaling NextGen Rice” Impact Program aims at scaling up adoption of new production methods across countries. The program will connect rice-producing countries across East Asia, the Pacific, and South Asia to take innovations and sustainable practices to scale.

Representatives from Ministries of Agriculture, Water, specialized agencies, private sector organizations, farmers’ alliances and technical experts will work together to:

  • Develop plans to take resilient rice production to scale within their country, based on their unique needs;
  • Exchange lessons from their national experience across a range of issues critical to scaling, such as research and extension, technology, policy, and markets to accelerate the pace of scaling across all countries.
  • Identify, together with a host of stakeholders operating in the field, models for transforming the rice industry at every level.

Program Launched:   June 10, 2025

Participating countries: Bangladesh, India, China, Vietnam, Cambodia, Indonesia, Philippines

Partners: International Rice Research Institute, Sustainable Rice Program, and more being added.
