Scaling Eco-Friendly Rice Production

The World Bank

Rice cultivation is a major contributor to global greenhouse gas emissions, accounting for 16% of all agrifood methane emissions. This unsustainable practice threatens the livelihoods of approximately 1.5 billion smallholder farmers worldwide who depend on rice production.

In partnership with the International Rice Research Institute and local universities, the Rice Production Initiative Program’s Objective is to scale up adoption of eco-friendly rice production methods across countries.

Participants to this program will:

  1. Develop country specific practical implementation plans to reduce methane emissions from rice farming.
  2. Learn how, through public and private partnerships, collaborating with scientists and farmers, countries that have successfully implemented low rice-emission rice farming.
  3. Identify and work with local and international academia, think-tanks, private sector, and other stakeholders on an adapted model to transform their rice industry into a high quality, low-carbon sector.
